Taraba Govt Hands Over Wukari General Hospital To Federal University Wukari
…Proposed Teaching Hospital To Take Off Soon
The Taraba state government has granted approval for the handing over of the Wukari General Hospital to the Federal Ministry of Health, as site for the take-off of the proposed Federal University Teaching Hospital.
Following this development, the facility will now be transferred to the Federal Government, which will in turn provide all the needed infrastructures and equipment for upgrading the hospital to a tertiary health center for the benefits of not only the people of Taraba, but also the neighbouring states .
This is beside serving as a training facility for the medical students of the university and also as a research center in the field of medicine and other scientific innovation and initiatives.
Gov Ishaku had granted the approval through the state commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Barr Sam B. Adda, whom he has mandated to liaise with both the management of the Federal University and the Federal Ministry of Health for an agreed date for the formal handing and taking over ceremony.
The hospital which was sited on a 45 hectare of land, was constructed during the regime of late Commissioner of police, Joseph Goomwalk, while he was the military governor of the defunct Benue Plateau State.
It was given a facelift along with two other hospitals in Bambur and Gembu all in the three Senatorial districts of the state, in the first term in office of the current administration in the state, from the hitherto inhabitable state he found health facilities in the state when he assumed duties as governor.
Following the inauguration of a medical school at the Federal University, Wukari, the management had sought the ceding of the hospital to it for conversion into a training institution for its medical students.
The request which was being processed administratively, became a subject of political interpretations by some political elements in the state, who falsely accused the governor of deliberately refusing to take action and the result of which they alleged that the federal government was relocating the proposed teaching hospital to the Jalingo Federal Medical Center from Wukari.
Even the clarification from the management of the university that they were able to convinced officials of the federal ministry of health to waive the extant policy on citing new teaching hospitals in existing federal medical facility in states where there was one to allow the usage of the hospital could not sway the mischiefs,who were bent on making a political capital out of a purely administrative issue.
Barr Adda had earlier told this newspaper that with the gubernatorial approval, the stage was now set for the ceremony to symbolically hand over the hospital to university.
According to him, once the Sallah holidays and the May Day celebrations were done with, officials of his ministry and that of health were scheduled to travel to Wukari for final documentations with the management of the university where they were expected to agree on a specific date for the handing and taking over ceremony
